Maintaining Study-Life Balance During Peak Prep

Published on Feb 08, 2026

Preparing for the SPSC exams is often described as a marathon rather than a sprint. When the exam dates start drawing near, the urge to study for 14 hours a day can be overwhelming. However, sacrificing your mental and physical health is a recipe for burnout, not success.

1. Set Hard Boundaries for Study Time

Just like a regular job, your studies should have a "clock-in" and "clock-out" time. If you decide to stop studying at 9 PM, close your books at 9 PM. Your brain needs time to process information and recover. Studying right up until you fall asleep severely impacts your sleep quality.

2. The Non-Negotiable Workout

Exercise isn't just for building muscles; it's essential for cognitive function. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and reduces stress hormones. Whether it's a brisk 30-minute walk around your neighborhood or an intensive gym session, make it a non-negotiable part of your daily routine.

3. Quality Over Quantity

A focused, distraction-free 4-hour study session is vastly superior to an 8-hour session where you're constantly checking your phone. Use techniques like the Pomodoro method (25 minutes of intense focus followed by a 5-minute break) to maintain high concentration without exhausting yourself.

4. Maintain Social Connections

Isolation can quickly lead to depression and anxiety. While you shouldn't be partying every weekend during peak prep, taking a couple of hours off on a Sunday to have coffee with a friend or spend time with family provides a much-needed emotional reset.

5. Practice Self-Compassion

There will be days when you don't meet your study goals. You might score poorly on a mock test. When this happens, avoid harsh self-criticism. Understand that bad days are part of the process. Forgive yourself, adjust your plan if necessary, and try again the next day.

Remember, the goal is to pass the SPSC exam as a healthy, balanced individual ready to take on administrative responsibilities, not as someone who has completely sacrificed their well-being to clear a cutoff.
